Current Sermon Series – Luke 9 to 19

From 22nd January we kick off our next sermon series. We are working our way through Luke’s gospel. The big question in this section of Luke is about Jesus’ mission: What did Jesus come to do? And a closely related question is about his call: What does it mean to follow?

Whether you are investigating Christianity for the first time, or even if you have been a Christian for many years, this series will be a terrific opportunity to reconsider who Jesus is, what he came to do, and what it means for you.

Current Series: The King Revealed

We are currently working our way through the second half of the gospel of John. We’ll be taking a close look at the suffering and glory of the messiah… At Jesus completing his mission as the long awaiting Christ by dying on the cross. It is a story of determination in spite of the confusion and faithlessness of those around him. Jesus is a man with a clear mission, supremely in control in spite of the horrific circumstances surrounding his death. The story is dripping with irony as the great moment of defeat and humiliation turns out to be the great victory and glorification of God – demonstrated in the resurrection.

Please join us as we are confronted with the extraordinary events that make up the very heart of Christianity. The events that transformed those who witnessed them and which have shaped the course of the world ever since.

During August and September we went back to the darkest days of ancient Israel.

we were warned by the godlessness of many of the kings.
we were inspired and encouraged by the courage and faith of Elisha, Hezekiah and Josiah as they brought the nation back to God.
we were devastated by the terrible judgment that came on both Israel and Judah.
But most of all we were challenged to learn the lessons of history and make sure God is our king.

1 Corinthians sermons from June 2009

In June 2009 we wrestled with 1 Corinthians chs 6 & 7.

The Christians in 1st century Corinth became followers of Jesus out of a pagan society. They were called by Jesus to stand united, to love one another, to honour Him. The problem is that the values of their society kept pressing in: things like sexual immorality, idolatry and greed. So the big question is: How can Christ’s people stand strong for him as the world presses in? That’s a challenge for us at The Lakes in the 21st century just as it was for the Corinthians in the 1st century.

How can I get a sermon on my mp3 player?

Once in the audio sermon library;
1. Click on the title of the sermon you have selected eg LIFE to the full- A King like no other.
2. Click on the “Download” link. This will download an MP3 file, approx 10MB in size, onto your computer wherever you direct it. Most likely onto your desktop. This may take a few minutes.
3. Move this file into the folder you use when uploading songs to your MP3 player.
4. Upload the file into your MP3 player as you would normally do with a song.

Can someone help me understand Revelation?

During our recent series on Revelation I was really glad to receive some help from other commentaries and sermons:

I started with the following two commentaries which were both excellent in giving an overview:

Barnett, P. and Anglican Information Office (Sydney N.S.W.) (1989). Apocalypse now and then : reading Revelation today. Sydney Square, Anglican Information Office.

This is really excellent in its historical background and discussion of genre issues. Really helpful break-up of Revelation but tends to skate over the details of the text of Revelation.

Wilcock, M. (1975). The message of Revelation : I saw Heaven opened. Leicester, Inter-Varsity Press.

This was a helpful companion to Barnett but again left me frustrated that I didn’t have a commentary that helped me wrestle with exegetical details.

Then I discovered what I consider a top rate commentary:

Beale, G. K. (1998). The book of Revelation : a commentary on the Greek text. Grand Rapids, MI, W.B. Eerdmans.

It is brilliant but huge (over 1,200 pages). I would have loved to read the whole thing but I just didn’t have time. Beautiful detailed exegesis from an ammillennial perspective. The commentary is also peppered with really helpful excursuses on a whole range of topics. For instance in chapter 12 there are discussions on “The end-time exodus against the background of the first exodus”, “The desert as a place of both trial and protection”, “The background of the ‘three and a half year period’”. Awesome and thoroughly recommended. Only drawback is the cost. I managed to pick it up through www.bookdepository.co.uk for less than $80 (which is only half of what it retails for in Aus). Postage was free and it arrived within a week!

Other really helpful resources were some sermons online by Carson (www.theopedia.com/D._A._Carson) and Beale (www.theopedia.com/Gregory_Beale). The theopedia pages include links to their sermons on Revelation.
