Singleton Evangelical Church is one of our sister churches that has been planted out of Maitland Evangelical Church. The church has been going for about 2 years but only recently called their first pastor.

Last year The Lakes contributed $4,000 to help Singleton, and we have set a goal to raise at least a further $2,000 this year. In fact, we would like to raise that money next week (Sunday 14th March). So could you consider bringing along a gift for Singleton Evangelical church next week? This would be over and above your own regular giving to The Lakes. We will have a special offering in the church meetings next week. If you would prefer to contribute via electronic funds transfer just put Singleton as part of the reference or message in the transaction. This is a terrific way to express our partnership with our brothers and sisters at Singleton!

Here is the website for Singleton Evangelical Church:

The Lakes is an independent church and we are not formally aligned to any particular denomination. We have people from all kinds of denominational backgrounds: Baptist, Anglican, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Catholic, Church of Christ.

The Lakes is part of a network of independent church called the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC). Our Senior Pastor, David Sheath, is the Secretary of this fellowship of churches.

Every month or so we have a supper for newcomers to come and meet with our Senior Pastor, to hear about The Lakes, and to have opportunity to ask any questions. If you would like to attend a newcomers supper speak to one of the members of our staff team or contact the church office.

As an independent church we are registered with the Dept of Fair Trading as an association. This means we need to abide by their rules- have a constitution, registered membership, Annual General Meeting, and audited financial statements etc.

At The Lakes we are convinced that church planting is a key way Christ is building his church. The Lakes began as a church plant in 2002, and since that time we have been committed to planting new congregations within The Lakes and supporting church plants in other regions throughout Australia.

During 2010 we intend to financially and prayerfully support two church plants:

Coast Evangelical Church (Forster): Chris Ekins and his family started this church in in Easter last year.

Singleton Evangelical Church: a daughter church of Maitland Evangelical. They called their first pastor (Scott McKenzie) in the middle of 2009.

Multiplying goal for 2010:

We want to actively explore opportunities for planting a congregation at The Entrance.

The Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches(FIEC)

FIEC is a fellowship of churches and pastors across Australia. Our churches are committed to praying for one another and continuing to promote church planting throughout Australia. FIEC pastors seek to provide support and encouragement to one another (for more information visit www.fiec.org.au).

Singleton Evangelical Church is one of our sister churches and part of the FIEC network of churches. The Lakes has been financially supporting this church since they appointed Scott McKenzie as their full-time pastor. This is what Scott has to say:

SEC is a church plant from Maitland Evangelical Church that began as a small Bible Study in October 2005. In july 2009 Scott Mackenzie was inducted as SEC’s first full time pastor. SEC is continuing the work of building God’s church in Singleton amongst the miners, soldiers, locals, and everyone else.

Our love is that we will know Jesus personally and cultivate a love to introduce Jesus to everyone we meet. Our funadamental task is prayerfully proclaimnig God’s word as this is the only way to intoruce people to the real Jesus.

There are 23,500 people in the Singleton Shire and the vast magority of them worship the God of materilism and do not know the salvation Jesus has won for them. Our prayer is that God would bless us to see our church reach 10% of this population within 10 years. We have a long way to go, and know that our God can do great things. Presently we have 30 adults and 25 children coming weekly. Please join us in this work by praying.

Northern Lakes Evangelical Church was a church plant from The Lakes. When the church commenced it largely consisted of people from The Lakes. Now there are a broad range of people from the region including many who have come to know Jesus through the church. Connan O’Shea is the senior pastor and this is what he had to say:

Our church commenced in February 2006 and we have 100 adults and 60 children. We meet at Gorokan High School. Our Sunday service starts at 9:30am. Matt Rowson joined us in 2009 as an assistant Pastor with his wife Jill and two children, Harry and Lily. Matt is championing Ministry (Training and Serving) and Mission (Evangelism). This is so we can grow in these two areas, in which we need to expand, necessary if we are to reach the 80,000 people in the Northern Region of the Central Coast and achieve our aim of building Christ’s Church

Coast Evangelical Church in Forster is one of our sister churches and part of the FIEC network of churches. The church started this year and we at The Lakes have been supporting the church in prayer and finances. Chris Ekins is the church’s pastor. This is what Chris has to say about the church:

We believe the Bible is God’s Word, and that at the centre of it is the gospel of Jesus- the good news of his atoning death for our sins and the great victory of his resurrection. Our church gatherings are fairly informal and relaxed in order to be accessible to those from an un- churched, working-class beach culture. Our Bible teaching is solid, but we’ll avoid udinf jargon. Our music will be lively and up-beat. We will embrace technology and media, using it to point people to Jesus. We also have a board of reference ( a group of repected Christian Ministers who encourage us and support us in our mission. We want our congregation to see thenselves as a fospel community who are on mission together. We want people to see themselves as missionaries to their own friends, families and co-workers.

Currently our Sunday service is at 10am, in Albury High School (Griffith St via Wyse St).We have a mixture of ages, welcoming families, students and people of many back grounds. Our desire is to honour Jesus by humbly listening to the written word of God.We place great importance on our teaching programme and our small groups. Teaching will usually be books of the Bible. Our small groups are called Open Bible Groups because the Bible is open, members are open to love each other and groups are open to new members.
