The students arrive this Wednesday 7th December and will be with us until the Sunday so you might see them around as they go about their work.  Some of our members are going to host some of the students for accommodation and meals.  They’ll be in our loca primary and high schools,  doorknocking our local homes and handing out GNW and Christmas flyers at the train station.  You’ll also see them at Carols this Saturday and on the Sunday as they will be helping us with Kidz church before they leave us to go back to Sydney.

Please pray for their time with us. May we show our Love to them with not only hospitality but with thankfulness to our Lord that they have come to help us as we reach out to our community this Christmas!

This year, two events will be held – a Women only event on Friday night 12 November 2010, and a Family Day event on Saturday 13 November 2010.

The Friday night will be a time for women to come along and create and decorate their own gingerbread house. The evening begins at 7:15pm, with light refreshments on arrival. There will also be a chance to join in some Christmas carols, and there will be a guest speaker, Wendy MacKenzie, who will look at the question ‘How do I find enjoyment in my life when things don’t always go right?’

On the Saturday morning, 13th November 2010, is a special time when family and friends can get together to create a gingerbread house. The morning begins at 9:30am, and light refreshments are provided. Children need to be a least 8 years of age, and need an adult to supervise them. Mike Plaege, a pastor at The Lakes, will also give a fun and interesting kids talk.

We are currently experiencing difficulties with our online registration provider. Until this is resolved, please purchase tickets from the Gingerbread House registration table on Sunday mornings at the Lakes Church. If you are unable to make it on Sunday’s, please call Megan on 0411 058 259.

Over the past year we have had a wonderful time engaging with our community.

• The gingerbread house event had over 300 people in attendance.We continue to increase the number of classes of School Scripture with 29 teachers from The Lakes.

• We have a key role with Ourimbah Christian Students at Ourimbah University.
• Good News Week continues to be a terrific week of engaging with our community. This year we had over 300 kids – over 100 of them are not normally part of our church family! The adults tent showed hospitality to almost 200 adults, and 130 people volunteered their time, money and energy to make the week a great success.

Engaging goals for 2010:

1. We want to distribute 2,000 gospels throughout our local community.
2. We want every member of our church actively praying for three Non-Christians.
3. We want to give every member of our church the opportunity to prayerfully consider how best they can engage with their Non-Christian family, friends and neighbours.

Connect for Life

During 2009 we joined in the “Connect 09″ campaign initiated by Sydney Anglicans. During the year we gave away many resources designed to help our community come to know Jesus.

• We gave away over 6,000 copies of Luke’s gospel (“The Essential Jesus”).
• We also ordered and distributed over 4,000 copies of Colin Buchanan’s DVD to primary school children in our region.
• We also gave away hundreds of “What’s happening at The Lakes?” DVDs.

What was “Connect 09″ now becomes “Connect for Life”.  We want to keep the momentum of outreach that we have enjoyed in the past year as we head into 2010.

During 2010 we will continue to engage in a doorknocking campaign throughout our area but this needs to be a grass-roots outreach where all our members are committed to engaging with the community in a whole host of ways.
