The book of Proverbs provides timeless practical wisdom that God uses to protect, love, guide, encourage, and warn us when we trust that what he says is pure gold and take it to heart!

You will appreciate the series even more if you start reading Proverbs beforehand.

The PTC is a correspondence course from Moore College for which the Lakes offers a seminar series every Monday night at 7.30. Units completed this year were Introduction to the Bible, Old Testament (Joshua – 2 Kings) and just concluding, New Testament (Gospels). Next Year we are offering New Testament (Acts) and at a time to suit interested applicants, Introduction to the Bible. Contact Ian for more details.

We allocate a term per unit of the course, meeting each Monday night for ten weeks (an hour and a half per night). Participants are expected to do a small assignment at home and read ahead (maximum three hours per session). They are also encouraged to sit an exam at the end of the unit which is set and marked by Moore College, sat at the Lakes venue, although not everyone chooses to sit for the exam. Moore College also provides Course Notes for each unit. The college charges about $80 per unit per person, concessions are also available. A further charge of $5 per person per unit is made for photocopies of additional material. (Charges will tend to increase slightly each year)

At the successful completion of six units participants are awarded a certificate called the Preliminary Theological Certificate (PTC). Completion of all 18 qualifies for a Certificate in Theology (Th.C.). There are 4 units on the New Testament, another 4 on the Old Testament, 3 on Doctrine, 2 on Church History and many others, some compulsory, some optional. Units can be done in any order, one is not a prerequisite for the other.

A very popular unit, even for people who don’t intend doing the whole course, is Introduction to the Bible. We intend to offer it each year and will do so again in term 1 next year. The course shows the overall theme of the Bible and how the various books of the Bible fit together. Scripture teachers, Kids church leaders, small group leaders, find this course very helpful. This is good unit to start the course with.

Over thirty members of the Lakes have already attempted at least one unit of the course (people shouldn’t feel they have to do the whole program) and six have already received their PTC and are going on with the next stage, the Intermediate Theological Certificated (ITC).
