Over the next couple of months we return once again to Paul’s first letter to the
Corinthian church.
Corinth was a strategic location in during the Roman Empire. It was located on a
small land bridge or ‘isthmus’ which connected Northern Greece to Southern Greece.
You can see from the picture above just how narrow the section of land is – only 6
km! Not only was Corinth the city that people passed through as they travelled by
land throughout Greece, but it was also a key sea port! Ships travelling from East to
West through the Mediterranean would stop off in Corinth. Sometimes the goods
were transferred – bought and sold in Corinth. But sometimes the ships themselves
would actually be rolled on logs through Corinth as a short cut. This was considered
preferable to the dangerous shipping conditions that would be encountered by ships
that attempted to travel below Southern Greece (the Peloponnese).
